HINSDALE, NH—A local retiree
who has been attending the races for decades made the score of his life at
Hinsdale Park on Friday, November 29, 2002, outwitting Ebenezer Scrooge to
win the grand prize in the track’s Holiday Humbug promotion.
Ken Gunnerson, a patron of the local racetrack since back
in the days when Hinsdale Park hosted harness action, snared an all-expense
vacation for two to the Bahamas. The Walpole native has been retired for 42
½ years from Hubbard Farms and said he enjoys spending his free time playing
the races.
“I knew about the Scrooge promotion,” said Gunnerson,
referring to the special day Hinsdale Park set aside for fans who wanted to
avoid the crush of retail outlets on the traditional first day of the
holiday shopping season. “But I didn’t think I’d get that lucky. I’ve been
coming to Hinsdale since way back in the days when horses pulled sulkies
around here and I’ve never hit it this big.”
Scrooge—portrayed by an energetic character actor—roamed
the grandstand and clubhouse, spreading ill will and bad cheer amongst
Hinsdale Park patrons. To snare the top prize, Gunnerson had to outwit
Scrooge in a demented version of the old “Let’s Make A Deal” TV game show.
Other prizes won by Hinsdale Park patrons included a new
snowblower and a 35-inch color television.
The track continues its Holiday Humbug weekend of
promotions on Saturday (free lunch preceding doubleheader action at 1:00 and
8:00 p.m.) and on Sunday, with a 1:00 p.m. post and $2,500 in additional
giveaways. |
