On Sunday afternoon, March
16, 2003, 11 of the 14 member Rosettes Chapter of the Red Hat Society from
Brattleboro, VT came for a Sunday Brunch at Hinsdale Greyhound Park..
What is the Red Hat Society?
The
place where there is fun after fifty (and before) for women of all walks of
life. They believe silliness is the comedy relief of life, and, since they
are all in it together, they might as well join red-gloved hands and go for
the gusto together. Underneath the frivolity, they share a bond of
affection, forged by common life experiences and a genuine enthusiasm for
wherever life takes them next.
The Red Hat Society is often referred to fondly as a "disorganization,"
though they have been forced to impart a degree of order to their
operations. It was inadvertently begun by Sue Ellen Cooper of Fullerton,
California when she and a few friends took inspiration from a popular poem
entitled "Warning" by Jenny Joseph, which begins "When I am an old
woman...". Since the poem mentions wearing a red hat and purple attire, she
and her friends formed a group which met on a regular basis for tea in their
red hats and purple dresses - in public, of course.
When Sue Ellen and her friends were featured in Romantic Homes Magazine in
July of 2000, they began to get inquiries from other interested women who
wanted to start their own chapters. For a more detailed account of the
origins of the Red Hat Society, please read the page entitled,
"About the
Red Hat Society" on their web site.
