Lussier Snags Top Prize In HGP Handicapping Showdown

Ron Lussier of Bellingham, MA, jumped out to an early lead and never looked back in Hinsdale Park’s tri-annual OTB handicapping contest on Feb. 20, bolstering his bankroll to the tune of $3,900 as the top horseplayer in a field of 78 entrants.

After nailing a $33.80 longshot in the early stages of the ten-play showdown, Lussier coasted home with 5,270 pari-mutuel points, augmenting his lead with some smaller but solid scores.

“The winning strategy was to try to come up with a good longshot,” said Lussier, who added that he and a pair of handicapping buddies, Fred Radwanski and Gerald Cook, always team together to pool their winnings in HGP contests. “We like this contest, it’s very competitive, and we’ve been coming up to Hinsdale since its inception. This time, it really paid off.”

The top five finishers and prize breakdown (78 entrants x $100 entry fee each) follows.

1) Lussier (5,270 points) to win $3,900 in prize money (50 percent of pool)

  2) Gutkowski (4,620 points) to win
       $1,950 in prize money (25 percent of pool)

3) Corbett (4,177 points) to win
     $936 in prize money (12 percent of pool)

4) Harney (3,714 points) to win
    $624 in prize money (8 percent of pool)

5) Kostanski ( 3,575 points) to win
    $390 in prize money (5 percent of pool)

HGP has tentatively scheduled its next handicapping tournament for June.
