Hey OTB enthusiasts: Can you believe the Kentucky Derby is just a little more than three months away?

Here at HGP we certainly can. This week we’re busy preparing for the first of three advance betting pools for the Kentucky Derby and Kentucky Oaks Future Wagers, which are open for wagering from Thursday, January 26 through Sunday, January 29.

Also this weekend is top-class Card Room action: On Saturday, January 28, HGP will host the region’s richest Texas Hold’Em poker tournament, with a prize pool expected to hit $30,000.

As in past seasons, the Kentucky Derby Future Wager allows racing fans to bet on candidates for the Kentucky Derby at odds that could be more attractive than those they would receive on Derby Day. The winning payout for each pool is based on the odds at the close of betting of that specific pool. Payouts are made when the race is declared official, and each pool contains 23 individual horses and a “field” option consisting of all other remaining three-year-olds.

Upstairs in the Clubhouse Card Room, first place in the $30,000 hold’em tourney will be $20,000, based on a prize structure of 100 contestants who ante up $360 apiece. The entry fee buys $6,500 in mythical chips, and prize money will be paid to tenth place. Deal-in begins at 1:00 p.m., with tournament play starting at 4:00 p.m.

In addition to this weekend’s Derby Futures betting and $30,000 poker tourney, we’ve got 50+ afternoon and evening simulcast signals, plus live greyhound racing on our new winter schedule: Saturdays at 1:05 & 8:00 p.m., plus Sundays at 1:05 p.m.

Last week we mixed poker and politics for another eTrivia shot at $25.00. We wanted the name of the U.S. President who reportedly won $6,000 playing poker during his first two months in the US Navy, then later used his winning bankroll to fund his first run for the U.S. Congress.

The answer was Richard Nixon and plenty of people knew it. We chose Kym Fisk of Worcester, MA, at random from amongst all correct guesses to receive the top prize. Nice going.

Now how ‘bout a new eTrivia teaser? This week we’ll gear our question toward the Kentucky Derby Futures: Can you name the talented colt listed in Pool #1 who just this week won an Eclipse Award for his championship two-year-old season? He’s sure to be well-backed in the Futures betting.
